Ledesma linked to Azzurri Thursday 3 July, 2008

Lazio’s Argentine midfielder Cristian Ledesma is set to obtain an Italian passport and reports suggest that he could enter the Azzurri frame.
The 25-year-old has been playing in Italy since he joined Lecce in 2001 and he should receive a passport before the beginning of August.
Ledesma has never been capped for his homeland due to Argentina’s abundance of midfield options and could follow in the footsteps of compatriot Mauro Camoranesi, who is an Azzurri regular.
There are whispers that Marcello Lippi sees Ledesma as a possible successor to Milan midfield ace Andrea Pirlo, who is nearing the end of his international career.
Within the next fortnight, Ledesma is expected to sign a new contract to tie him to Lazio until 2013 and he has often stressed his love of the peninsula.
The challenge for the former Lecce man known for his stunning long-range strikes is to catch Lippi’s eye in the opening stages of the new season and push for a shirt for Italy’s World Cup 2010 qualifiers.
